Who may apply to the Youth Academy?
Youth ages 9-15
Where does it take place?
All activities will be held at the C.F.D. Training Building in Columbus at the Bakalar Airport.
Does this program cost anything?
This program is free to all the participants.
What are the activities that our youth will be participating in?
The Youth Academy will be similar to the Police Academy and Fire Academy that our officers and fire fighters must attend when they are hired.
Each morning, officers from the Columbus Police Department will cover such exciting topics as SWAT, K-9, bike patrol, firearms, and bomb squad. During the course of the presentations, officers from these specialized divisions will answer student's questions and give them the opportunity to get hands on experience with actual equipment used by law enforcement professionals.
After a lunch break, participants will spend the afternoon with members of the Columbus Fire Department. Students will learn about fire prevention, CPR, and first aid. They will also get to watch CFD firefighters in action as they put out a fire and simulate a vehicle extrication using the "jaws of life" and other tools. Students will be shown the proper way to use a fire extinguisher and will get the opportunity to put out a small fire. Participants will also get the chance to ride in a fire truck and get wet while they play a game of water ball.
Participants should be ready to jump right into this exciting hands-on experience. While meeting new people they will learn more about themselves, and about a career in public safety. GET READY FOR AN EXPERIENCE YOU WILL NEVER FORGET!!
