Handgun License
There are two types of handgun licenses available in the State of Indiana. A Hunting and Target license is a limited license and allows a person to lawfully transport a handgun to or from hunting or target shooting only. A Personal Protection or unlimited license allows a person to lawfully carry a handgun at anytime on his or her person or in a vehicle. Anyone living in the city limits of Columbus, Indiana must make their application for a handgun license through the Columbus Police Department.
To make application for either type of handgun license you need to fill out a preliminary information sheet, which allows us to run a criminal records check on you. These information sheets are available at our Records Division, Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. or at our Download Center. If applying for a Personal Protection License you must also submit a letter stating the reasons you are requesting the unlimited license. These letters should be addressed to the Chief of Police but should be submitted to the Records Division along with the completed information sheet. You will be requested to call our department approximately a week after submitting your paperwork to schedule an appointment to fill out the actual Application For Handgun License and to have your fingerprints taken.
Total cost for a Personal Protection Permit as of August 2002 is $25.00. The Hunting and Target Permit is $15.00. The Records Division will furnish additional information to you when you pick up your preliminary information sheet.
