However, there is a chance that no one will be available at the time you stop by, or you may have a lengthy wait. It is best to call ahead of time for an appointment. Call 812-376-2620.

How long do I have to fill out a State Accident Report (more than $1000 total damage)?
From the date of the accident, you have 10 business days until the report must be mailed in. When you stop by our department, you will be given a copy of the officer's report and a blank report, which you must fill out. You will also be given a pre-addressed envelope, which goes to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Feel free to ask us questions if you have any trouble filling out the report. Your insurance agent is required to assist you in filling out the blank report.
How do I file a police report?
An incident report can be filled out by calling the front desk at 812-376-2600, assuming the incident occurred in the city limits of Columbus. A police officer will answer the phone and complete the report for you. You may also file an incident report by personally coming to the police department at 123 Washington St., Columbus, IN.

There are payment drop boxes located at three places: just inside the south entrance to City Hall; on 4th Street just a few feet east of Washington St.; and at the Records Division window within the police department for after hours drop-off. You may also pay directly to the Records Division personnel at the Police Department during M-F, 8-5.
How do I obtain a criminal records check on myself, such as is required sometimes for HUD and pre-employment?
You may obtain this by coming to the police department Tuesday through Friday, 8-5.
Is there a charge for a criminal records check?

What is a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) check and how do I obtain one?
The most common reasons the BMV requires a VIN check on your vehicle include: (1.) you purchased a vehicle with an out-of-state title; (2.) you moved to Indiana from out-of-state; (3.) you purchased a trailer without a VIN number; (4.) you built a new trailer; and/or (5.) you have an error on your title. If the vehicle is inoperable or not legal to drive, you may call the police department at any time and we will send an officer to your location, within the city limits, to perform this service. Otherwise, you should bring the vehicle to the Columbus Police Department at your convenience if the vehicle can be driven legally. There is no charge for this. |
