On call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day the investigations division provides investigative expertise for a wide array of crimes. The division typically investigates more than 1,600 cases a year.

The division includes detectives working in two general areas. Major Crime Unit detectives or MCU, and Detective Crimes Unit, or DCU. Major crime detectives work all crimes against persons. DCU detectives work all crimes against property. The division also joins the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division and the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department as members of the Bartholomew County Death Investigation Team.

Work in the division is a team investigative approach with division supervision overseeing two shifts of detectives. While a detective is “on-duty” from 7AM until 12Midnight each day, nights, weekends & holidays are “on-call” days covered by the division.

A domestic violence coordinator works closely with Turning Point and the county prosecutor providing referrals for service and the filing of criminal charges on these important cases.

The division provides a school liaison officer that works closely with the Bartholomew Consolidated Schools who also is the head of the DARE program.

Recognizing Columbus's largest crime problem; theft, the division also has a retail theft coordinator who works closely with retail security experts to facilitate the sharing of information and the identification of organized theft rings. This investigator chairs monthly meetings of the area retail theft experts.

Working daily with the Child Protective Services division of the office of Family and Children the sex crimes expert handles a variety of investigations. Child molesting and child abuse are also investigated in the team approach with CPS.

The division also has a polygraph examiner on staff. Trained at the renowned Baxter School of Lie Detection in San Diego, California the examiner provides polygraph services to the entire department and is a crucial phase of the department’s hiring process.

A forensic computer crimes expert also investigates computer crimes and online protection of children.

Lastly no division can function without a qualified Crime Scene Investigator. The division provides a primary and back-up crime scene investigator to all major crime scenes, as well as maintaining the department’s expansive property room.

Detectives receive nationally recognized training from experts in the fields of: computers, interviewing, homicide investigation, bloodstain pattern interpretation, and many other investigative fields.

These expert skills are a moment away 24/7/365 days a year.
