Citizens' Academy
The Columbus Police Department “Citizen’s Academy” was first introduced in 1992 as a tool to open the department up to the citizens of Columbus. Since the first class of a dozen students, it has grown to 35 students and now boosts alumni of more than 300 citizens. The Citizen’s Academy is a once a week evening class lasting eight weeks, which introduces the citizens of our community to the different aspects of their police department. Classes have shown recent drug trends and SWAT equipment and techniques used in major incidents. K-9s, Crime Scene Investigators and Bomb Technicians also participate in the academy.
The highlight of the Academy occurs during week eight when citizens jump into the role of police officer and handle armed car stops, robberies in progress, and belligerent drunks refusing to go jail quietly in a role-playing scenarios.
The students meet each Thursday night where they are told of incidents that are funny or sometimes just plain strange. The Citizen’s Academy is scheduled yearly and participants can anticipate a criminal history check prior to acceptance. Information concerning exact dates and times will be dispensed on this site soon. On behalf the Columbus Police Departments men and women, we encourage you to participate in the academy and you will take this opportunity to learn as much as possible about the officers that make up your police department. Applications can be printed from the Download Center and mailed to Lt. Matt Myers of the Columbus Police Department.
