Just a few of the cadetsThe Columbus Police Department began a new program in 2003 that is designed to get young people involved in the department and their community. The department is looking for young men and women, ages 15-20, who are willing to volunteer their time to learn about the Columbus Police Department and law enforcement. The selection process for the cadet program will be based on the applicant's background, a formal interview, 500 word essay and recommendations by personal references. Once selected, cadets will participate in the Cadet Academy, which will last approximately one week at the police department.

Cadets will be introduced to a variety of topics within the law enforcement field including police ethics, traffic direction, patrol tactics, community relations, CPR, and first-aid. As a part of their training they will be expected to undergo physical fitness training, classroom instruction and practical exercises. Upon completion of the academy, the cadets will work at community events such as Ethnic Expo, 4-H Fair and Festival of Lights parade. In addition, they will be involved in other proactive police work such as crime prevention and neighborhood watch programs. Cadets will participate in a ride along program as well as additional monthly training. There is no cost to the cadets and once selected they will be provided uniforms and other necessary equipment to perform their duties.
